Panel roll forming machine: things to consider before buying

One of the first factors to consider when buying a stationary plate roll forming machine is to buy a single, double or multi-profile machine.
What are the options? The single roll forming machine only has a set of racks, shafts and roll mold tools. If you want to roll into a specific profile, this is a good choice. According to the configuration file, you can choose between pre-cutting line or post-cutting line. Entry-level machines are cheaper, and the production speed is about 100-150 FPM. Companies with high-volume demand usually use single-profile machines with flying cut-off systems up to 400 FPM.
Advantages: Affordable entry-level machines can be used by start-up companies that do not need the best speed, while a higher-priced production line in its class can provide high-volume companies with excellent production speed. Disadvantages: Only one type of panel profile can be processed.
Double-profile machines are often referred to as double-height or double-layer machines because one profile has a set of lower racks and tools, and the second profile has a set of higher racks and tools. Both levels are on a common basis. Materials enter and exit from higher or lower floors. If the floor space is limited, adding a second platform to your existing roll forming machine is a good choice.
Running two configuration files on just one machine can also save manpower and additional costs for the second set of auxiliary equipment (electrical settings, controllers, decoilers, shears, etc.) required for the new production line. Although it saves space, you can only operate on one level at a time. The following are the most common configurations on the dual configuration panel production line: • “Ag” panel • R/PBR panel • U/PBU panel
Advantages: the ability to provide the owner with two styles of panels; save floor space, manpower and auxiliary items. Disadvantage: Only one configuration file can be run at any given time.
Multi-profile machines, also called floor or raft machines, are produced on a single level and are at the higher end of the cost. These production lines are usually used by large manufacturers who have a demand for many different profiles. This demand does not exist in all markets, but there are exceptions. Each profile has its own set of brackets and tools mounted on interchangeable “base plates” (also called rafters or chucks). The conversion is relatively fast, but an overhead crane or forklift is required to convert the bottom plate/rafters/cartridges.
Advantages: It can meet the needs of an unlimited number of panel profiles without the need for multiple machines. Disadvantages: usually more expensive than single or double profiles. Overhead rigging (forklift or crane) required for conversion.
What is your current and potential market? Experts generally believe that potential buyers should understand their market before buying any machine. Today’s typical market for regional roll forming machines requires ag panels or R/PBR panels, but it may be both, neither of them, or more.
how do you know? Ask the roofer and/or lumberyard you plan to build for. There is a strong demand for regional panel collections-whether in style or specifications-which may change, but they usually do not change frequently or significantly. Roofers tend to use the panels they are most familiar with and comfortable to use. It depends on whether their market is mainly residential, commercial, agricultural or a combination of the two.
