Roll-A-Rack in Ohio has developed a racking system for installing solar energy on ballast membrane roofs.The design of the frame will not damage the structural integrity of the roof, and the stability of the roof depends on its ballast.
Roll-A-Rack says that the additional weight of solar energy usually exceeds the physical limit of the membrane roof.In order to solve this problem, the company developed a 12-inch metal channel rack, which is distributed on the existing roof ballast, while fixing the solar panels.
The frame can be as thin as No. 22 and adopt roll forming.Roll-A-Rack says it supports 50 psf of snow load and 37.5 psf of wind lift.The company stated that automatic installation is feasible for its products.
Roll-A-Rack said it is working hard to arrange for developers or installers to test the product.The first 100 kW racks will be provided free of charge.The company also stated that it will conduct a wind-rise analysis to determine ballast requirements.
Part of the funding for product development comes from a grant from the Office of Solar Energy Technology of the U.S. Department of Energy.
